No matter whether you have an 18v drill, 18volt saw or any other tool you need to have at least one 18V Charger and preferably a spare one.

As anyone who has ever done any DIY or construction work will tell you battery powered tools work great, except when they don’t. Most tools come with one battery charger and one battery, this may well make sense if you are only a light user but if you are any kind of power user you need to have at least one spare power tool battery and ideally a spare 18V Charger so you can keep your batteries charged.

A battery without any kind of charge is really just an expensive paperweight. A power tool without any working battery is even worse! So you need to make sure you have not only got at least 3 batteries but a spare 18V Charger on site.

No matter which brand of tool you use you should follow a few common sense rules, always use the same brand, always get the same platform. That way you can share the batteries you have and you will only need to buy one new battery a year to keep topping up your supplies.

Admittedly the brand name 18v charger prices can seem steep but buying a brand name makes sense if you are a heavy user. You don’t want to realize your charger isn’t up to the job half way through building something.

People often ignore the battery when they are looking at power tools and this is a real mistake. How much use would your car be without petrol? Well that is exactly how much use your drill will be without a fully charged battery.

I have often seen people take lots of time to clean their drills, make sure that no wood chippings or sawdust gets into the mechanics. But you should also do some basic maintenance for your batteries and battery chargers. Keeping the contacts clean, corrosion free and not bashed in will go a long way to increasing your batteries life span.

One other thing you can do is to drain your battery total at various times. While there is nothing quite as annoying as a battery powered drill that doesn’t quite have enough battery charge to do the job you want it to do. This can actually be a good thing if you take the time to drain that power tool battery before you put it into your charger.

You will find lots of comments online about battery memory, the basic idea is that if you dont drain all the power then it doesn’t ever get fully filled up again. This is why you may want to pay one of your kids to sit there with drill in hand and let them drain it completely once a month or so.

This works best on the days when you have the time to be able to make sure the battery is then fully charged again before you have to use it for work.
